Germany to review 1974 nuclear cooperation accord with Iran

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Berlin, March 16, IRNA
Germany-Iran-Nuclear
The German government is currently reviewing whether it wants to continue its peaceful nuclear cooperation with the Islamic Republic of Iran, the daily Frankfurter Rundschau reported Wednesday.

According to a German-Iranian nuclear cooperation agreement, signed in 1974, Germany pledged to cooperate with Iran in the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

The German-Iranian nuclear cooperation accord must either be terminated by November 2006 or else it would automatically extend itself by another five-year term.

The German center-leftist government coalition which opposes nuclear energy, appears to be deeply divided as to whether it should completely cancel the accord or re-negotiate a new deal based on the current nuclear talks between the European Union and Iran.

Despite the 1974 nuclear deal, Germany and Iran haven't had any cooperation in the nuclear field following the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Germany was a key partner of the former Shah regime in developing and expanding Iran's nuclear program in the 1970s.

In August 1975, German firm Kraftwerk Union (KWU) begins work on the Bushehr reactors on the basis of a letter of intent.
