IAEA HAS NO EVIDENCE OF IRAN'S NUCLEAR AMBITIONS

RIA Novosti

PARIS, March 10 (RIA Novosti, Andrei Nizamutdinov) - The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has no proofs that Iran is using its nuclear power program for non-peaceful purposes, Yury Sokolov, IAEA deputy director-general told RIA Novosti on Thursday.

"All the agency's checks of how Iran uses the technologies of joint application, and all our attempts to make tests by taking samples, visit enterprises, and study documents and programs do not indicate that the materials and equipment under the agency's control are switched over to non-peaceful purposes," Sokolov said.

The IAEA's deputy director-general, who is in Paris as part of preparations for an international conference, "Nuclear Power for the 21st Century", said that an energy minister will be representing Iran at this conference.

Sokolov said that the participation in the conference will enable Iran to voice its opinion on its nuclear power development program.

"The agency has no grounds for denying Iran the possibility of using nuclear power," Sokolov emphasized.

The high-ranking representative of IAEA had positive words for the negotiations being conducted with Iran by European Union countries and Russia in order to obtain additional guarantees of the peaceful nature of the Iranian nuclear program.

"A positive solution to Iran's nuclear program issue found through efforts of European countries and Russia would defuse the situation around Iran and allow it to exploit those possibilities which are afforded today by the international community, and at the same time to allay the concerns about the non-peaceful uses of nuclear power in Iran," said the source.
