Iran casts doubts on Europe`s ability to carry out nuclear obligations
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Tehran, March 5, IRNA -- Head of Iran`s Supreme National Security Council`s (SNSC) Foreign Policy Commission cast doubt here Saturday over Europe`s capabilities to carry out its commitments of the nuclear deal with Iran. "So far, Iran`s expectation in talks on political-security, technological and nuclear tracks have not been realized," Hossein Mousavian told IRNA. He added that Europe has not shown sufficient seriousness within the framework of the Paris agreement which embodies and is underpinned by verifiable assurances. Furthermore, Europe has neither put forth proposals or suggestions on verifiable guaranties or assurance on prevention of diversion of uranium enrichment nor has it taken any initiative on the issue, he said. Moussavian, a member of Iran`s negotiating team with EU, said that lack of progress on issues over firm guarantees and verifiable assurances could derail the underpinnings and shake the principles of the October 2004 Paris Agreement. The SNSC strategic committee is slated to review the progress and compile the proceedings of the Iran-EU discussions groups at the end of the Iranian month of Esfand (March 20). If the solid gains and satisfactory progress have been garnered then the credibility of the Paris agreement will be preserved, otherwise it is possible that Tehran will reassess the continuation of the nuclear talks with EU," Moussavian underlined. Meanwhile, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors called on Iran to speedily ratify the additional protocol in the parliament. The Chair of board Ingrid Hall from Canada made the request in the Thursday session of the body where she also asked Iran to go on with cooperating with the IAEA and make its nuclear activities further transparent. Outlining the results of the board`s meeting which concentrated on verifying the peaceful nature of Iran`s nuclear activities in the past three months as well as the views of the body`s member states, she also said that all member states of the Board of Governors supported negotiations between Iran and the European trio. She further noted that the IAEA Board of Governors backed long-term talks between Europe and Iran to achieve a perfect and acceptable solution. Mrs. Hall also called on the IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei to publish a report on the situation of Iran regarding the protocols. According to her, some of the board member states are for continuation of suspension of uranium enrichment activities by Iran as a gesture of trust-promoting. The meeting of the Board of the Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency closed Thursday afternoon after four days of work. 2324/1771
