Khatami: Karoun-3 project a source of pride for country

Ahvaz, Khuzestan prov, March 2, IRNA -- President Mohammad Khatami 
on Wednesday described the Karoun-3 project as a source of pride 
for the country in terms of engineering and developmental 
achievement. 
He made the remark while addressing the experts and employees 
involved in construction of the Karoun-3 dam. 
Referring to the characteristics of the dam, the president said 
the construction and completion of the project, which the foreigners 
claimed Iranians would never manage to accomplish by themselves, 
proves the high potential and high capabilities of the Iranian 
experts. 
Terming as very significant the achievements of country in such 
areas as water, electricity, petrochemical industry, agriculture, 
biotechnology and nanotechnology, he said Iran has attained 
self-sufficiency in many fields and could even export them to 
foreign countries. 
Earlier today, President Khatami inaugurated two power plants in 
the city of Izeh in the southwestern province of Khuzestan. 
The two units, each with a capacity of generating 250 megawatts of
electricity, will enhance the country`s power generation capacity to 
6,500 megawatts. 
The projects which are parts of Karoun-3 dam and power plant, have
been implemented by the Iranian experts with an objective of 
meeting a part of the country`s need for electricity and also to 
collect flood waters in the province. 
A total of rls 7,280 billion is needed to complete the whole 
project of which rls 6,480 billion has been spent on different phases 
of construction. 
Once the power plants become operational, a 36 percent boost 
ill be witnessed in the nationwide generation of hydroelectric 
energy. 
Karoun-3 dam is considered as one of the three major national 
hydroelectric power plants, whose annual revenue is estimated at 200 
million dollars. 
Over 500 experts and 5,700 employees have been involved in the 
project. 
The Karoun-3 dam comprises eight 250-MW power generation units 
and its construction has been underway for the past nine years. The 
project is expected to be finalized before March 21, 2006. 
Karoun-3 dam and power plant are being constructed over Karoun 
river near the city of Izeh in northern part of Khuzestan province in 
southwest Iran.
