Iran unlikely to create full nuclear fuel cycle-Rosatom head

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Moscow, Feb 28 (Itar-Tass/IRNA) - Head of Russia`s Atomic Energy
Agency Alexander Rumyantsev believes Iran is unlikely to "create a
full nuclear fuel cycle comprising the recovery of uranium, its
enrichment, production of fuel, its placement in the reactor and
then its evacuation, processing and disposal, as it is economically
efficient only on the condition that capacities of no less than
8,000-10,000-megawatts are used."
Rumyantsev said at a press conference on Monday, "In 2006 Iran
intends to put into operation the first power generating unit with
the capacity of 1,000 megawatts."
According to Rumyantsev, Prime-Tass reported, "Iran plans to make
nuclear facilities with the total capacity of 7,000 megawatts."
In this connection Russian specialists have told Iran not to
create its own full nuclear fuel cycle.
Rumyantsev recalled that during his visit to Iran the sides signed
documents on nuclear fuel for the Bushehr nuclear power plant being
built by Russian specialists.
The Rosatom head did not disclose the exact dates of nuclear fuel
supplies referring to confidentiality of the documents.
The official only said the deliveries "will be carried out in
accordance with the technological schedule of NPP construction." The
return of spent nuclear fuel will be made in 10 years and it will
be financed by the Iranian side.
