Iran, Russia Sign Nuclear Accord

27 February 2005 -- Iran and Russia signed a nuclear fuel agreement today, paving the way for Iran to get its first reactor up and running.

The accord was signed at the Busher nuclear plant by Iranian Vice President Gholamreza Aghazadeh and Aleksandrr Rumyantsev, the head of Russia's Atomic Energy Agency.

The signing was delayed by a day, and came after the two senior officials toured the $800 million complex.

The plant is currently under construction in the Persian Gulf port. It is scheduled to go on line in June 2006, three months later than originally scheduled.

The United States has accused Iran of trying to produce nuclear weapons. Tehran says its program is for peaceful purposes.
