IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Tehran, Feb 22, IRNA -- Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei said on Wednesday Iran should reach such a stage of scientific and technological progress that the great nation of Iran deserves. In a meeting with engineers and researchers in the field of industry and technology to commemorate 13th century scientist Khaje Nassir Tousi, the Supreme Leader said that the great nation of Iran enjoys honorable background in science and technology and the Islamic Revolution helped Iranian engineers attain self-confidence and move forward towards scientific progress. The Supreme Leader blamed the western colonialist strategy for the retrograde period Iran passed through during Qajar and Pahlavi eras in terms of science and technology. "From the middle of Qajar era until the end of Pahlavi`s rule, Iran passed through a retrograde period which demolished all its bright and magnificent background in terms of science and civilization owing to the colonialist goals of the western empire," the Supreme Leader said. "During the almost one-hundred year period, the then governments only followed the western model and prevented any innovation, initiative and self-belief from being developed by the domestic technicians and this helped western countries dominate every national affair. In this period, Iranians used to follow the western lifestyle instead of relying on their own initiatives to make progress," the Supreme Leader said. Ayatollah Khamenei said that the Islamic Revolution put an end to the retrograde period and helped Iranian engineers regain self-confidence. "They embarked on building dams, power plants, manufacturing airplanes, military hardware and develop nuclear technology. The extensive breakthrough Iranian engineers have made is part of the blessings of the Islamic Revolution," the Supreme Leader said. 1416/1412
