US rejects EU deal on joint Iran strategy: report
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Berlin, Feb 21, IRNA
The United States refused to accept a European deal on a joint strategy towards Iran's nuclear program, the online site of Der Spiegel news magazine said Monday.
According to the report, European Union leaders made the proposal to new US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice during her recent visit to Brussels.
Under the deal, the Americans would support Europe's diplomatic Iran initiative, however should the talks fail, the Europeans would vote for tough US-backed UN economic sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Rice reportedly rejected the European offer, calling instead for Iran's political isolation and economic blockade.
The EU has repeatedly urged the Americans to join the ongoing sensitive political and nuclear talks with Iran.
