Russia stresses diplomatic ways to settle Iran`s nuclear issue

Moscow, Feb 18, IRNA -- Russia`s Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov here Friday stressed the importance of adopting peaceful strategies to settle Iran`s nuclear issue and avoiding non-diplomatic ways. In a meeting with visiting Iranian Secretary of Supreme National Security Council Hassan Rowhani, Ivanov expressed his country`s readiness to boost all-out cooperation with Iran. He assessed Russia`s stance on Iran and particularly the country`s peaceful nuclear issue as unchangeable. Rowhani, for his part, said Iran and Russia enjoy common stance on establishing stability and security in the region and confronting presence of foreign forces and added expansion of NATO to East would result in instability in the region which runs counter with national interests of regional states. The SNSC secretary reiterated his country`s determination to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes based on international regulations and termed as unacceptable any discriminatory attitude and pressure against Iran to make the country withdraw its inalienable right. He stated that continuation of US forces` presence in Iraq would bring instability for that country and the region and expressed hope the Iraqi nation would determine their fate through withdrawal of the forces. During the meeting, the sides explored avenues for bolstering bilateral cooperation in all fields regarding an upcoming visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin to Iran. Ivanov and Rowhani also discussed Iran`s decisive role in anti-drug campaign, the two countries` common stance on Iraq and Afghanistan and the urgency of non-presence of foreign forces in the region. The Secretary of Supreme National Security Council Hassan Rowhani arrived in Russia`s capital city of Moscow on Wednesday on a two-day official visit at the invitation of his Russian counterpart -- Secretary of the Russian Security Council Igor Ivanov. He held meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin, his Russian counterpart, and Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov on issues of mutual interests and Iran`s nuclear program in particular. 2327/1771
