US against an Iran-Europe nuclear agreement: Rowhani
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Algiers, Feb 15, IRNA -- Iran`s Supreme National Security Council Secretary Hassan Rowhani said here Monday night that the United States is putting pressure on Europe in the ongoing nuclear negotiations because it is not in favor of any agreement that may be entered into by the two sides. Talking to IRNA in an exclusive interview, Rowhani expressed hope Europe would not be influenced by the United States` pre-conceived opinion on the talks and act independently. "The Americans, based on their record, do not want issues affecting them such as the current (nuclear) issue to be settled by others and can therefore be expected to put Iran`s peaceful nuclear activities in a bad light as well as put pressure on Europe to toe its line," he said. Pointing to latest developments in the Iran nuclear case, the SNSC secretary stressed that although the dossier is no longer on the regular agenda of the IAEA, which has issued a report finding no evidence Iran is in the process of developing nuclear weapons, the US would still insist on the issue being taken up in future meetings of the board. "Iran and Europe have reached an understanding in political terms. The door has been opened for the two sides to continue holding talks not only on the nuclear issue but also on other aspects of their relations," Rowhani declared. He stressed Iran, in its talks with Europe, seeks a general understanding geared toward resolving all issues. Shifting to the main agenda of his talks with Algerian officials, Rowhani said Tehran and Algiers have ample grounds for bolstering bilateral relations. "The two sides have a common political determination to boost ties and cooperation," he added. He disclosed that a security agreement will be signed between Iran and Algeria in the near future. The SNSC further said the two sides would also discuss regional and regional issues of mutual concern, including Palestine and Iraq. "The issue of Iraq`s future, ways to put an end to the country`s occupation, and establishment of a national government are issues of concern to both Tehran and Algiers," Rowhani further said. He cited other issues of international concern, including reform of the United Nations, the campaign against terrorism, globalization, and development of the Islamic world as of great importance for discussion by the two sides. Iran attaches importance to cooperation and convergence with Algeria as a member state of the IAEA Board of Governors and also a member of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) group in the International Atomic Energy Agency in its desire to resolve the issue. Iran`s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Secretary Hassan Rowhani arrived here Monday evening for a three-day visit. During his stay in the Algerian capital, Rowhani will meet with President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia and the Algerian foreign minister. 2327/2321/1432
