Schroeder urges "active US support" for Europe`s Iran diplomacy
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Berlin, Feb 12, IRNA -- German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder called on the United States "to actively support" European diplomatic efforts to resolve the Iranian nuclear issue. "I explicitly encourage the American government to actively support the Europeans` diplomatic efforts," said Defense Minister Peter Struck while reading a speech by Schroeder, who had to cancel his attendance at the annual Munich Security Policy Conference as a result of a severe cold. "Iran will only abandon its nuclear (military) option if its economic as well as legitimate security interests are safeguarded," Struck quoted Schroeder as saying. The German leader stressed that there was also a need for closer cooperation between the European Union and the US to engage in "a dialogue with the region to develop sustainable security structures for the Persian Gulf region." Schroeder has repeatedly expressed his strong opposition to an American military intervention in Iran, calling instead for a comprehensive diplomatic solution to Iran`s nuclear dossier. OT/2321/1432
