Envoy says nuclear arms not in Iran`s military doctrine
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Kuala Lumpur, Feb 11, IRNA -- Iran`s Ambassador to the Philippines Jalal Kalantari said in Manila on Friday that the production of nuclear arms has no place in Iran`s military doctrine. Kalantari, in a press conference, said Iran`s nuclear energy program is peaceful, and that Iran is simply trying to use the nuclear technology to satisfy its energy needs. He said Iran`s population has doubled since 1979 and currently stands at a total of 70 million, adding that relying on fossil energy to meet the requirements of such a large population is "not logical". Kalantari said Iran has no alternative but to use the nuclear technology to diversify its energy sources, stressing that all Iran`s efforts to that effect have been carried out under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Elsewhere in his remarks, the ambassador highlighted the achievements of the Islamic Revolution in promoting freedom and institutionalizing democracy over the past 26 years. Kalantari also rejected US charges that Iran is supporting terrorism, and recalled Iran`s efforts to fight terrorism. He added that any effort to uproot terrorism in the international community requires a unified action under the aegis of the United Nations. Kalantari stressed that such action must be free from any discrimination and selective approach. Iran`s Ambassador to the Philippines described Tehran-Manila ties as positive, and expressed hope that the air traffic agreement between the two countries would set the stage for promotion of mutual trade and cultural relations. 2330/1432
