Japan Urges Iran To Reach Deal With EU

9 February 2005 -- Japan today joined nations urging Iran to reach an agreement with the European Union to abandon its controversial nuclear programs.

Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi met with visiting Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi and afterward said that Japan supports Great Britain, France, and Germany as they try to persuade Iran to end uranium enrichment, a process that can make fuel for nuclear reactors, but also bombs. The United States accuses Iran of secretly seeking to develop nuclear weapons.

Kharazi reiterated today that Iran has nothing to hide. He said Iran wants to reach an agreement with the EU and continue its nuclear program under the monitoring of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Iranian and European officials began a fresh round of talks yesterday in Geneva on Western demands that Iran abandon uranium enrichment.
