Khatami: Iran opposed to production of nuclear weapons
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Tehran, Feb 9, IRNA -- President Mohammad Khatami on Wednesday said Iran is opposed to producing nuclear weapons but insisted however on peaceful nuclear technology. "Neither my government nor any other government can give a convincing reply to people for giving up peaceful nuclear technology," said Khatami in a gathering of foreign ambassadors, attaches and representatives of international organizations based in Tehran. Khatami noted that opinion polls show that the majority of the public opinion would like the country to proceed with completing the peaceful nuclear technology. The world should rest assured "We definitely respect the nation`s will and reject the illegitimate requests of others," he said speaking on the 26th victory anniversary of the Islamic Revolution. "The nuclear technology we have obtained is the result of unsparing efforts of the youth while being exposed to international sanctions," he added. "We are determined to make progress in all scientific fields including nuclear technology," President Khatami said. He reiterated that Iran is a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), saying, "The NPT is not restricted to articles 2 and 3 but also includes articles four and six and we abide by the treaty." Khatami stressed that no government in Iran has the right to take a step in the opposite direction of the country`s scientific and technological progress or deprive people of peaceful use of nuclear technology. The president noted that the November 2004 resolution has clearly confirmed Iran`s peaceful application of nuclear technology. 1405/1412
