Asefi rejects Blair`s anti-Iran claims
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Tehran, Feb 8, IRNA -- Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi on Tuesday ruled out British Prime Minister Tony Blair`s anti-Iran claims, calling them affected by the prevailing atmosphere and influenced by the extremist stances of the Zionist regime. Asefi said British prime minister`s remarks, raised on the pretext of opposition to terrorism and nuclear weapons, are supportive of the Zionist regime in nature. He said the Islamic Republic of Iran has nothing to do with terrorism and it is itself a victim of terrorism as many of its citizens and officials were killed in the campaign against this sinister phenomenon. He added that however, some western states have become a safe haven for terrorists and countries such as the UK are supporting the Zionist regime, which is an explicit example of state-terrorism. The official added that British prime minister also realizes that his claims are baseless and does not believe in what he says. British Prime Minister Tony Blair called Iran a state sponsor of terrorism on Tuesday. "It certainly does sponsor terrorism. There`s no doubt about that at all," Blair told a parliamentary committee. Blair alleged that it was a `good sign` that the United States and Europe were `working together` to convince Iran to abandon its feared pursuit of nuclear weapons. "Iran has now been given a set of obligation that it`s got to fulfill," the prime minister added. "I hope they fulfill it." 1420/2322/1432
