Malaysian FM lauds Iran`s nuclear confidence-building strategy

Kuala Lumpur, Feb 7, IRNA -- Malaysian Foreign Minister Hamid Albar on Monday lauded Iran`s nuclear confidence-building policy. Albar further told visiting Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi that his country supported Iran`s policy for cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). "Iran has had effective cooperation with the Agency and we believe in honoring the rights of developing states, including Iran, to the peaceful use of nuclear energy," said Albar. Kharrazi for his part that the Islamic Republic of Iran has been after development of peaceful nuclear energy in order to implement its economic development plans. He said Tehran is serious and sincere in the talks, expecting Europeans to be the same. He added that Iranians make assessment of the talks after a three-month period, hoping that the outcome of the talks would be fruitful. The minister said Iran has had good cooperation with the IAEA and agreed to the IAEA inspectors` visits within the framework of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in line with its policy of confidence building. He said Tehran`s stance in the talks is transparency and maintaining rights in accordance with the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, while insisting on its rights to peaceful use of nuclear energy. He added that the pressures are not limited to Iran and any other developing state attempting to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes would come under such pressures. The Iranian and Malaysian foreign ministers then discussed a number of other regional and international issues, including the UN structural reforms, upcoming meeting for revision of the NPT, the South-South cooperation, more contribution to the Organization of the Islamic Conference and international developments. They also stressed the need for regular consultations among developing states to guarantee and draw up strategies for a fair global system. 1420/2322/1432
