Nuclear weapons bring Iran no power: Zarif
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
New York, Feb 6, IRNA -- Iran`s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Mohammad Javad Zarif said here Saturday night that nuclear weapons will not bring power for Iran. Addressing a gathering of Iranian, Pakistani, Afghan and American Muslims, Zarif said the Islamic Republic does not seek to threaten the international security, adding Iran has launched no war for the past 250 years. One of the Islamic Republic`s ideals is to negate and resist against hegemony, he stated. The Iranian ambassador, however, stressed, "If any war breaks out against us, we will defend our territory bravely." He pointed to eye-catching progresses made by Iran in various scientific and industrial fields particularly in nuclear technology and said Iran`s nuclear technology witnessed a growth achieved by Iranian scientists and based on domestic technology. Zarif added all political, cultural and economic pressures imposed on Iran are aimed to discredit a democratic government in the country. "Iran`s capabilities will bring about both threats and opportunities. We should turn the threats into opportunities." He termed Iran as "the biggest and most powerful" country in the region and stressed promotion of participation culture, civil institutions and meeting people`s demands. 2327/1432
