FM Spokesman: Iran in no need for go-between in ties with US

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, Feb 6, IRNA -- Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi
stressed that Iran is in no need of go-between in its relations with
the United States.
He made the remarks in his weekly press briefing here Sunday.
Referring to the recent proposals of Australian and Pakistani
prime ministers to act as go-between in Iran-US relations, he said
the proposals were inspired by the two officials` good will to help
remove tensions.
However, he noted, Iran was of the opinion that the US views
regarding Iran should be changed.
In answer to a question regarding the visit of Palestinian
Authority Abu Mazen to Tehran, the spokesman said that the Palestinian
embassy in Tehran had informed the Foreign Ministry of the Palestinian
official`s interest in visiting Iran which was warmly welcomed by
Iranian officials.
He further referred to the recent visit of the head of Fatah
Movement Farouk Kaddoumi to Iran and pointed to Iran`s friendly
relations with all Palestinian groups.
Asked to comment whether the recent remarks of US officials really
aimed at tarnishing the election atmosphere in Iran, he said the
Americans pursued many objectives in their remarks only one of which
could be to influence the domestic issues in Iran.
Answering another question on Iraqi elections, Asefi noted that
Iran looked at the event as a victory for the Iraqi nation because it
believed the election was the pre-stage of the foreign forces`
withdrawal from the country which would lead to establishment of
peace there.
He also congratulated the Iraqi nation over holding elections in a
country which has suffered years of suppression under the Saddam
Hussein`s rule.
On Iran-Russia agreement on nuclear fuel, he said the two
countries have signed a preliminary agreement and were working to
finalize it.
Asefi rejected the rumors that the International Atomic Energy
Agencies (IAEA) has requested another visit to Iran`s Parchin nuclear
site and said no request of the kind has been submitted to Iran.
