Pakistan supports Iran`s right to peaceful use of nuclear materials

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Islamabad, Feb 2, Kyodo/OANA/IRNA -- Foreign Minister Khurshid Mehmood
Kasuri said Wednesday Pakistan supports Iran`s right as a signatory of
the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty to peaceful use of nuclear
energy.
He told a press conference with Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, secretary
general of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, that Pakistan
was actively interacting with Iran, the United States and the European
Union to defuse the tension over the Iranian nuclear program.
"We can help in trying to bring the temperature down. We are
telling the world that we cannot afford another crisis in the Islamic
world," he said.
Kasuri added Pakistan supports the EU approach to resolve the row
between Iran and United States and hopes it will be resolved while
taking into consideration the concerns of both sides.
The International Atomic Energy Agency has found that Iran has
been engaged in a clandestine uranium enrichment program and wants it
to open its nuclear installations to international inspections.
The United States has said that using of force or imposing
sanctions on Iran through the UN Security Council are feasible options
to deal with the question.
Kasuri said Pakistan is actively interacting with Iran, the United
States and the EU and that matter had been extensively discussed with
the EU leaders during the recent visit by Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz
to Brussels.
"We will continue to play a diplomatic role. We can only do that
and nothing more. Ultimately it will be a sovereign decision of the
government of Iran" on how to deal with crisis, he said.
The OIC secretary general said his Jeddah-based organization
respects the Iranian attitude as long as Iran abides by international
rules and holds dialogues to resolve the impasse with the European
Union and the United States.
