President: Iran will strongly stand up to any aggression

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Kampala, Jan 20, IRNA -- Iran will strongly stand up to any
aggression, President Mohammad Khatami said on Thursday asked by a
reporter about the military threat the US posed to Iran.
"Iran does not want war or tension with any country including the
United States. Military attack on Iran will benefit none," President
Khatami said.
During a joint press conference with his Ugandan President Yoweri
Kaguta Museveni, Khatami said if the US could extinguish the fire it
set ablaze in Iraq, it would be a great job.
Khatami said that no one is sad over fall of Saddam Hussein, but
the issue of Iraq could be tackled through a more humanitarian way.
He added the US attack on Iraq resulted in mass killing of people
and destruction of their homes and paved the way for terrorist`s
entrance to Iraq to take revenge from the US and the Iraqi people.
Khatami, who is on the last leg of his 7-nation African tour,
said the US is so involved with the Iraqi issue and it can not think
about invasion of another country.
Without doubt, all the states will condemn the US behavior and
plan, Khatami said, adding the same case took place for its invasion
on Iraq.
He expressed his regret over relentless killing of Iraqi people,
saying that Iran is not happy with the death of American soldiers in
Iraq too.
Khatami said that the possibility of US attack on Iran was low
because of its involvement with the Iraq trouble.
Pointing to the restructuring the United Nations, Khatami said
that though positive proposals are on the table, but, dangerous issues
have been arising with reforming the international body, serving the
interests of certain countries.
World is not a tribe, which one or two people could impose their
own opinions on the others, Khatami said.
Khatami said that the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and the
Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) should do something to
drop negative points in the context of the UN reform.
"I`m sure the Secretary General Kofi Annan is against the negative
points which certain countries want to impose in the context of the UN
reform, President Khatami said.
Khatami added the UN measures should be to the benefit of justice
and human being.
Museveni, also stressed the expansion of Iran-Uganda relations,
saying that the cooperation will be further expanded thanks to the
visit of President Khatami.
"Iran and Uganda are located in two different continents, which
they can export goods and services to each other and cooperate in
manufacturing joint products."
He said that Uganda has joined the Union of the East African
Nations which has enforced common tariffs for exports and preferential
trade.
