As Current Negotiations Falter, Resolution With Iran May Come From CooperationFebruary 1, 2005Drawing on recent travel to the Middle East, conversations with Iranian officials and experts, and his extensive research on Gulf security, Michael Kraig has written a new policy analysis brief, Realistic Solutions for Resolving the Iranian Nuclear Crisis. This brief is a response to the United States' current foreign policy toward Iran-a foreign policy that has failed to produce measurable results, particularly in the area of nonproliferation. The first part of this brief identifies three Iranian perceptions and domestic realities that underlie Iran's quest for a nuclear fuel cycle. The second part recommends five ways in which the United States can adopt a coherent foreign policy strategy regarding Iran that includes cooperative multilateral policy options involving European and Arab friends and allies. Kraig's work has been featured in Yale Global Online, a publication of the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization and in the journal Middle East Policy. This brief is part of a larger project, the Gulf Security Initiative, sponsored by the Stanley Foundation in Muscatine, Iowa. Kraig is a program officer at the Stanley Foundation.
