Diplomat highlights merits of EU 3rd draft resolution on Iran
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Vienna, Nov 27, IRNA -- A senior diplomat says the European draft resolution bears a number of positive points, including the acknowledgment of Iran`s voluntary suspension of its nuclear program, absence of legal commitments for suspending uranium enrichment and the confidence building nature of the move. The diplomat stressed the need for members of the nuclear Non- Proliferation Treaty (NPT) to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes, emphasizing that Iran`s nuclear program had not been diversionary. The diplomat said the call to remove Iran`s nuclear program from the IAEA Board`s agenda and the country`s commitment to the IAEA`s protocols and Safeguards Agreement were among other positive points of the resolution. He referred to two negative points in the draft resolution, including its reference to the country`s past `breach(es)` and the `essential` need for sustained confidence-building on Iran`s part. The diplomat says the Iranian delegation is in consultation with Europeans for dropping the wordings from the text of the third draft resolution put forward by the Europeans. The diplomat believes that the two negative points are in fact the `chocolate` Europe wants to give to the US. 1420/2322/1432
