Iran begins suspending uranium enrichment program: IAEA
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Vienna, Nov 22, Kyodo/OANA/IRNA -- International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors verified Monday that Iran has begun suspending activities related to a uranium enrichment program in line with an accord with Britain, France and Germany to fully stop the activities, IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei said. As Iran has kept its promise, the UN nuclear watchdog is now certain not to decide at a governing board meeting beginning Thursday to refer the Iranian nuclear issue to the UN Security Council for possible economic sanctions. Work is under way in Iran to suspend all related activities in Iran, ElBaradei told reporters at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna. The suspension work is expected to take at least several days, an IAEA official said. After verifying a full suspension, IAEA inspectors will seal related facilities and materials, the official said. Experts from Iran and Europe reached a provisional agreement on the Iranian nuclear issue during two days of talks in Paris on Nov. 5-6. A formal agreement was reached after the two sides ironed out differences on the scope of the nuclear freeze and on how long the freeze would last. In the enrichment process, uranium material can be produced for use either for energy generation or for making atomic bombs. Iran has maintained that its nuclear program is entirely for peaceful purposes. /2322/1432
