MP says Iran will not abandon peaceful use of nuclear technology

Tehran, Nov 1, IRNA -- Head of Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission said here Sunday that the Iran will not abandon its decision to use peaceful nuclear technology. In a Meeting with the ambassador from the European Troika -France, Britain and Germany- Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and head of G-77 group at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Governing Council, Aladdin Boroujerdi stressed Iran`s firm resolve in using peaceful nuclear technology. Our activities are within the framework of the Non-Proliferation-Treaty (NPT), but by dispatching a 1030 page report to the nuclear watchdog agency and leaving the doors open for the IAEA inspectors the MP said. "We have proved our good-will and confidence building policies to the world." Alluding to the article four of the NPT which obliges the technology-rich countries to assist other member states on acquisition the peaceful nuclear know-how, he added that if there have been infringements, it rests with those states which posses the technology and who have not carried out their commitments in transferring nuclear expertise to Iran. He also said Iran nuclear knowledge is indigenous and garnered through efforts of the Iranian experts. Although, Iran has ample oil and gas resources, "some day these resources will run out and it will be too late to look for alternative sources of energy." Boroujerdi underlined. He thanked the "prudent stance" taken by the Troika, NAM and G-77 groups expressing hope that these views will rein in the undue pressure by the US on IAEA Governing Council and boost the prestige of the independent groups in the international community in the future. Ambassadors form Malaysia, Niger, Cuba and South Africa also participated in the meeting and voiced their ardent support of Iran`s peaceful nuclear program. The envoys referred to their visit of the several industrial centers and lauded Tehran on its good cooperation with the IAEA. Head of Iran`s Atomic Energy Organization Gholam-Reza Aqazadeh said here Sunday that Iran is to suspend Uranium activities of the Conversion Facility (UCF) of Isfahan and Natanz voluntarily based on an agreement reached with the European trio of Britain, Germany and France. Talking to reporters after a meeting with a four-member delegation representing the Non-Aligned Nations in the IAEA Board of Governors, he rejected claims on accelerating enrichment activities by Iran before November 22. "The Isfahan plant has a specified capacity and cannot operate beyond what has been planned. "The plant has no enrichment activity. Raw materials are just processed there and it has started activities in this field since a few months ago" The IAEO head rejected claims on Iran`s activities in a hidden site in northeast of Tehran, saying "There is no place which Iran tries to hide it. We deny such claims." He stressed that Iran provided grounds for IAEA inspectors to visit any site anywhere. Aqazadeh said the United States and certain groups usually make propaganda against Iran on the eve of the Board of Governor`s meetings. Asked whether Iran has suspended production of UF6 (uranium hexafluoride), he added such activities are among the output of Isfahan facilities which is slated to be suspended Monday. He pointed to the outlook of Iran-Europe talks, stressing "I believe we will have very hard talks with the Europeans in the future." He cited Iran`s confidence-building as the main demand of the Europeans while Iran seeks continuation of peaceful nuclear activities. 2324/1432
