Russia-Iran nuclear cooperation pegged to relations with IAEA
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Moscow, Nov 17, Itar-Tass/ACSNA/IRNA -- Russia`s future cooperation with Iran in the nuclear sphere will depend on that country`s relations with the world community and the International Atomic Energy Agency, the chief of the Federal Atomic Energy Agency (Rosatom), Alexander Rumyantsev said in an internet conference on Wednesday. "How cooperation with Iran in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy will develop will depend on that country`s relations with the IAEA and the international community," he said. Rumyantsev did not rule out Russia might take part in the construction of more nuclear power units in Iran. "Iran two years ago declared the intention to build another six reactors and there is a possibility they may be eventually be included in our contract portfolio," the Rosatom chief said. He recalled that the first reactor of Iran`s Bushehr nuclear power plant, currently under construction, would go on stream at the end of 2006, in keeping with the schedule agreed with the Iranian side. "The reactor`s physical launch is scheduled for 2005," Rumyantsev said. He pointed out there were no fundamental obstacles to the conclusion of a supplementary protocol with Iran on the return of spent nuclear fuel from Bushehr to Russia. "Russia has pledged to accept spent nuclear fuel for storage and recycling, and Iran, to return spent fuel. The sole differences that remain concern contract value," Rumyantsev said . /2322/1432
