Japan hails Iran-EU nuclear agreement
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Tokyo, Nov 16, IRNA -- Japanese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hatsuhisa Takashima here Tuesday welcomed Iran`s agreement with the European Union`s trio -- France, Germany and Britain -- on suspension of uranium enrichment as a "good" development. Talking to IRNA, Takashima said Japan had been using its influence on Tehran to suspend uranium enrichment within the framework of resolutions passed by the International Atomic Energy Agency`s Board of Governors. The spokesman said Japan will declare its official stance on Iran`s nuclear activities after the IAEA Board of Governors`s scheduled meeting on November 25 and submission of IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei`s report. He said his country has not changed its original stand on the nuclear issue, that is, that Iran should strictly adhere to resolutions of the IAEA Board of Governors. Iran on Monday submitted a letter to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirming its agreement with the European Union (EU) to freeze its nuclear program. Iran`s representative to the IAEA, Pirouz Hosseini, said in Vienna Sunday night that the Islamic Republic in the letter confirmed that it was suspending uranium enrichment from November 22 as a confidence-building measure. The Iran-EU nuclear deal was the climax of several rounds of difficult talks held by the two sides in Vienna, Paris and Tehran. Iran had previously insisted on its right to uranium enrichment under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) which guarantees such a right. In a deal concluded Sunday night with the EU, Tehran voluntarily agreed to uranium enrichment suspension for a limited duration as a confidence-building measure. 2327/2321/1432
