China welcomes Iran-EU agreement on nuclear issue

Beijing, Nov 16, IRNA -- A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman welcomed Iran-EU agreement on suspension of uranium enrichment here on Tuesday. "Beijing is in favor of holding talks with Iranian officials in this regard," Iiu Jianchao said during his weekly briefing. He added that Beijing welcomed the proper settlement of Iran`s nuclear issue through negotiations. He expressed gratitude over the diplomatic efforts made by Iran, the European Union (EU) and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for resolving the nuclear programme, saying that Beijing backs the Iran-EU further negotiations. He was optimistic that Tehran`s nuclear dossier would be settled in the framework of IAEA. "China will constructively strive for a prompt resolution of the Iranian nuclear issue," the spokesman added. In this regard, Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing recently held talks with US National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice, as well his Russian, British and US counterparts. The Chinese minister`s talks were aimed at easing the Iranian nuclear problem. Li paid an official visit to Iran on November 6, at the invitation of his Iranian counterpart Kamal Kharrazi. During his meeting, he separately conferred with high-ranking Iranian officials, including President Mohammad Khatami, Expediency Council Chairman Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani and Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Hassan Rowhani. 2331/1432
