Iranian spokesman says country stopping uranium enrichment
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Paris, Nov 15, Itar-Tass/ACSNA/IRNA -- Iran has given consent to a proposal by the European trio -- Germany, France, and Britain -- to suspend enrichment of uranium as part of its nuclear program in exchange for cooperation. Hassan Rowhani, the head of the Iranian delegation, announced Tehran`s decision to accept the proposal Sunday after a meeting with ambassadors of the three countries in Iran. The terms to which Iran has agreed almost fully match the demands of a September resolution of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rowhani, Iran`s top official for nuclear policy, said. He indicated that the enrichment activity will at least be suspended during further talks with the European Union which Iran hopes would begin on December 15. Rowhani said his country has agreed to stop uranium enrichment and preparatory operations at the same time. Abolition of the enrichment program is called upon to lift US and Israeli suspicicions that Tehran is seeking to develop nuclear weapons. Otherwise, the IAEA warned, the so-called Iranian dossier could be submitted to the UN Security Council in which case the situation could go out of control. In exchange for renunciation of the program, the EU has offered Tehran cooperation in the nuclear industry, including aid in building a light water reactor and guarantees in fuel supplies, as well as cooperation in politics, security, and trade. /2321/1432
