Iran has guaranteed right to peaceful use of nuclear energy: envoy

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Islamabad, Nov 10, IRNA -- Pakistan-based Iranian ambassador Mohammad
Ebrahim Taherian has said that being a member of the nuclear
Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), Iran has every right to develop
nuclear energy for civilian purposes.
"We are only seeking to make use of this legitimate right
for our benefit," the envoy said in remarks published in the November
issue of Liberty International.
He maintained that Iran was extending full cooperation to the
International Atomic Energy Agency.
Notwithstanding the fact that the IAEA and its head have said
that there is no evidence Iran is using nuclear technology for
military purpose, efforts are continuing to pressure Iran and it goes
without saying that these pressures and threats have no legal basis
but are politically motivated, the Iranian ambassador said.
Taherian categorically rejected rumors that Tehran had provided
the names of Pakistan nuclear scientists to the UN atomic watchdog.
"This qusestion still figures for us as to why and under what
inspiration some of the Pakistani media feed these issues to the
public opinion here," he added.
The envoy also spoke highly of Pakistan`s policy of pursuing a
strategy of combating terrorism and sectarianism and enforcing
law and order besides economic development.
"Islamabad`s policy is proper and correct. In my view the
existing situation offers exceptional opportunity to both Tehran and
Islamabad for mutual progress and cooperation."
He, moreover, said that peace and security were vital to
sustainable progress in the region and elsewhere in the world.
"In recent years, terrorism and extremism have posed serious
threats to tranquility and security in the region and our country,
believing in good relations with its neighbors, desires all-out
cooperation and collaboration among regional countries to combat
these menaces."
He stressed that Islam is a religion of peace and no one should
be allowed to proceed in any way contrary to this religious
assumption.
