Iran-EU talks over without tangible result

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Vienna, Oct 27, IRNA -- Iran and European `Big 3` wrapped up marathon
nuclear talks here on Wednesday, failing to reach any agreement on a
European proposal for an end to Tehran`s uranium enrichment program.
The talks had been in row with a similar negotiations held in
the Austrian capital last Thursday with the parties refusing to offer
any comment on the discussions.
A member of Iranian team to the talks, Sirous Nasseri, was the
only official available to give a short briefing on the issue, saying
the talks had been held in a "friendly atmosphere and in goodwill."
Nasseri said the participants had agreed to continue the talks in
their future meetings.
He said the next round of the talks would be held in Europe. He
however refused to cite the exact location of the talks.
He said the Iranian party had provided the German, British and
French teams with a reply to the European offer.
The official refused to unveil further details.
Although details of the Iranian offer to Europeans have not been
revealed, certain non-official reports indicate that Iran voiced its
adherence to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), reaffirming
its right to acquire peaceful nuclear technology.
A western diplomat had early Wednesday cited the aim behind the
talks as encouragement of Tehran to freeze its uranium enrichment
program and nuclear fuel cycle.
Director General of the International Affairs Department at
Foreign Ministry Amir-Hossein Zamani-nia heads the Iranian delegation
to the talks, while directors general of the political affairs
departments at foreign ministries of Germany, Britain and France
assume European presidency in the discussions.
Furthermore, Iran`s permanent envoy to the UN Mohammad-Javad
Zarif, Iran`s envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
Pirouz Hosseini as well as Nasseri and Mohammad-Reza Alborzi were
among other members of Iranian team to the meeting.
An analyst closely following Iranian officials` reaction to the
European offer, said that the officials had announced that restricting
Iran`s access to nuclear technology marks a red line for the country
and it would not be acceptable at all.
He added that Iranian delegation had at its meeting with Europeans
called for providing necessary guarantees for enforcement of their
obligations.
He said that Iranian officials had acknowledged that they would
accept international supervision and control over their nuclear
activities and that they are ready to open the door for talks so as
to relieve possible concerns and confidence building.
An Iranian diplomat had already announced that Iran had informed
the European parties that it is ready for constructive and logical
talks to build up confidence with the global community but those
turning to the policy of intimidation should know that such a policy
is not effective.
