Iran cannot be induced to halt uranium enrichment for good: MP
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Tehran, Oct 24, IRNA -- A senior MP said here Sunday that Iran will not accept Europe`s call to permanently halt uranium enrichment activities in return for receiving limited nuclear technology. "Permanent suspension of uranium enrichment amounts to trespassing red lines, which we will not accept," head of parliament`s national security and foreign policy commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi said. According to media reports, Britain, France and Germany offered Iran Thursday with a deal to receive limited nuclear technology if Tehran permanently suspended all uranium enrichment activities. Iran is wearing out a November 25 deadline set by the IAEA board of governors for full review of Iran`s nuclear program and calling on Tehran to immediately suspend all uranium enrichment activities. The country has dismissed the deadline, saying it does not accept any obligation in this regard. Boroujerdi stressed that `access to peaceful nuclear technology is Iran`s legitimate right` which has been enshrined in the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), of which Tehran is a signatory. "The European countries must not expect us to concede our right under the NPT; according to Article 4 of the treaty, they are obliged to help (Iran have access to peaceful) nuclear technology," he said. But, the Europeans `do not want Iran to acquire this capability`, Boroujerdi added. The MP described access to nuclear know-how as `indispensable` for Iran, given that the country `will sooner or later run out of its fossil fuel`. Iran says its nuclear program is aimed at power generation, rejecting US accusations that the program is a cover to build an atomic bomb. Tehran insists it wants to master nuclear fuel cycle, which is permitted under the NPT. Ex-president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani warned against possible fallouts of a decision to deprive the Islamic Republic of producing its own nuclear fuel cycle, saying this will be `a dark mark in history`. "Depriving certain countries of their rights by big powers is an oppression which will pave the way for people`s dissatisfaction and this can definitely bring about dangerous consequences," he said. 2323/1432
