Khatami: US aims to deprive Iran of nuclear technology
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Tehran, Oct 20, IRNA -- President Mohammad Khatami here Wednesday said that the US policy towards Iran`s nuclear activities aims to deprive the country of its undeniable right to nuclear technology. Addressing domestic and foreign reporters, he dismissed Washington`s policy aiming to deprive Iran of its right to uranium enrichment to produce its required nuclear fuel. Expressing Iran`s understanding with the countries concerned about extension of nuclear weapons, he rejected the false claims of Senator John Kerry and President George Bush to deprive Iran of access to nuclear technology, given that it is also a matter of national pride and the result of the Iranians efforts despite all the sanctions. "They will certainly notice their mistake, though we never expect the US to officially recognize our rights," he added. President Khatami hoped that the US will develop more rational and just policies, given the lessons learned from its extremist policies and selfish approach. "I hope that Washington will choose policies that will be in the interest of the country as well as the international peace and tranquility. "If the US takes reasonable and just actions, the world will benefit and in the long-run the US interests will also be secured," he added. He further hoped that after imposing expenses on the American nation and the human community on account of its warmongering and unilateral policies the US will come up with a reasonable and just policy. Turning to the continuous US pressures on Iran, the president expressed confidence that it no longer can afford to repeat the approach towards Iraq, given that it will be against its own interests. In response to a question whether the US has submitted any proposal on Iran`s nuclear issue, he said, "Not only have we heard of no such a proposal, but according to the news, the US has not even welcomed the EU proposal to this end." In reply to a question about the hike in the oil prices and the consequent rise in Iran`s oil revenue, he said, "The revenue of the crude oil is deposited in the treasury account. Meanwhile, the government just draws the required amounts based on the budget bill and the excess remains in the account." 2326/1412
