EU seeks Iran`s cooperation on nuclear program

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

London, Oct 20, IRNA -- Senior officials from Britain, France and
Germany will travel to Tehran for talks on Iran`s nuclear program,
Foreign Secretary Jack Straw announced Tuesday.
Speaking at a joint press conference in London with his German
counterpart, Joschka Fischer, Straw said the talks would be held by
"political directors."
"We hope very much this matter can be resolved finally within the
Board of Governors (of the International Atomic Energy Agency) and
not referred to the UN, but only time will tell," he said.
Last weekend it was reported that the so-called EU-3 were
preparing to offer an incentives package to Iran, including a
commitment to resume stalled talks on an EU-Iran trade agreement and
to give up any military aims to develop nuclear weapons.
Fischer urged Iran "to fulfill its commitments and to avoid
miscalculation that will lead us into a very serious situation" but
also said that Britain, France and Germany wanted to encourage Iran
to cooperate with the EU.
"I want to underline that we are very much on the same track on
Iran. We are very concerned about the developments and I think it`s
very important that there is not a miscalculation in Tehran," he
said.
Straw said the three countries had worked very closely for the
last 18 months and engaging with Iran for 15 months on the issue,
but "Iran has yet to give us the confidence we need to have about
its intentions."
"We cannot go on indefinitely, but Iran could still give us that
confidence before the next meeting of the IAEA board on 25 November
by introducing an indefinite suspension of its enrichment and
processing-related activities," he said.
