Khatami: Referral of Iran`s case to UN indicative of IAEA`s failure

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, Sept 22, IRNA -- President Mohammad Khatami said here
Wednesday that any possible referral of Iran`s nuclear case to the
Security Council of the United Nations was an indication of the UN
nuclear watchdog`s failure and its impotence to solve a problem by its
own.
Speaking to reporters at the end of the cabinet meeting on
Wednesday, the president expressed hope that Iran`s nuclear case would
not be referred to the UN Security Council.
"We will try our best to prevent referral of Iran`s case to the
Security Council," stressed the president.
He further argued that by discussing the issue of sending the case
of Iran to the UN Security Council, the US was after taking away the
case from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and finding a
better chance to impose its influence.
"Of course, it will not find a better chance there too, because
there are some others in the Security Council who will oppose the US
stands," stressed the president.
Noting that Iran would not welcome the idea of discussing its case
in the Security Council, the president added that, however, this
would not, at the same time, prevent Tehran from using its legitimate
and international rights on employing nuclear technology.
He called as "positive" the report of IAEA Director General
Mohammed ELBaradei on Iran`s nuclear program and said if the IAEA
recognized Iran`s right to use nuclear technology, this would pave the
way for next understandings.
Stressing that Iran would not quit the nuclear Non-Proliferation
Treaty (NPT), President Khatami noted that, however, "if they still
insist on depriving Iran from its rights, then we will use the
technology at any cost, even if, it would be no longer under the IAEA
supervision."
"Whether be under the supervision or not, the Islamic Republic
would never move towards finding access to the atomic weapons,"
president Khatami reiterated.
Asked on the impeachment of the minister of roads and
transportation by the Majlis, President Khatami stressed that he was
satisfied with the functions of all ministers of his cabinet and
would support them.
