Lawmaker: Restricting Iran`s nuclear technology secures interests of US, Europe
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Tehran, Sept 21, IRNA -- Member of Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Hamid-Reza Hajibabaie here Tuesday said that the US and Europe`s interests call for restricting Iran`s access to nuclear technology and its reliance upon others. He told IRNA that they intend to disrupt the process of developing nuclear fuel cycle facilities by Iran to supply the country with nuclear fuel themselves. "The US and EU members have reached accord not to send Iran`s nuclear dossier to the UN Security Council. They could have proceeded with such a move, if they had actually meant to do it. "This is mainly due to the fact that they don`t wish Iran to stop cooperating and negotiating with the nuclear watchdog," he added. The lawmaker from Hamedan noted that while they are wary of not sending Iran`s dossier to UNSC, they continue exerting pressures on it through the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and even outside the boundaries of international laws. "They wish to see to it that Iran continues cooperating with IAEA provided it stops developing a nuclear fuel cycle and become dependent upon them. "Given that the Americans and Europeans are aware of Iran`s access to such technology which cannot be reversed, they wish to exercise their own control upon it," he added. He noted that once the dossier is sent to the Security Council, Iran will lose control of the case. Turning to the US and EU policy as one marked by threat, he said that Washington threatens Iran with sending its dossier to UN Security Council and Europe is set to force Iran into negotiations. "Though they are intent not to send the case to the Security Council, they desire to harness our nuclear technology within the framework of IAEA nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)," he added. The official underlined that Iran should continue exercising its own strategy. "Although we are aware of US-EU bond and their effort to secure their own interests, we should avoid getting into conflict with Europe. We should rather continue talks to pay a lower price in the challenge facing us," he added. The lawmaker said that though Iran aims to reduce its relevant expenses, it should not withdraw. He expressed confidence that Iran will succeed in achieving its goal, despite the difficulties. Predicting a long drawn out process for the country`s nuclear dossier, he said, "The case will neither be sent to UN Security Council nor be closed in November. It will rather remain open and the pressures upon us will continue as long as it is in the interests of the US and EU. "We should resume the enrichment process without fear of facing the Security Council. In the meantime, we should continue the relevant negotiations." He stressed that freezing uranium enrichment is against national interests. "Given that frittering away the time is one of the objectives of the US and EU, we should act with determination without giving in to worries," he concluded. 2326/2322/1432
