IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Tehran, Sept 20, IRNA -- Ali-Akbar Velayati, a senior Advisor to Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, strongly criticized the EU`s role in dealing with Iran`s nuclear dossier. The former Iranian foreign minister and supreme leader`s senior advisor in international affairs, who was addressing a conference held to commemorate the Islamic Revolution`s martyrs, added, "Whenever the interests of the expansionist world powers necessitates, such as the recent case of Iran`s dossier at the IAEA, they easily compromise with one another, ignoring the interests of other nations." Dr. Velayati added, "The EU big three have in their proposed resolution said exactly what the Americans have always stressed in dealing with the case, save for the softer language they have employed in their draft." He stressed, "One of the major objectives of the three European countries in proposing their harsh draft against Iran was pleasing Washington, despite the fact that their deed was in direct contrast with their September 2003 Tehran Communique." The leader`s advisor in international affairs reiterated, "Those who are familiar with the history of these countries and the history of the international diplomacy never count on such countries` promises and commitments." Velayati singled out the EU`s promise to Tehran to equip Iran with a complete nuclear fuel cycle, arguing, "That was a big lie by the EU big three for instance." He further stressed, "These countries easily make such promises at unofficial talks, but when time comes for official talks you will be encountered with their other face." Criticizing "those who might have forgotten the Europeans` political conduct", Velayati advised them to come to their senses and think more realistically. He added, "Yet, whenever we stand firm and defend our righteous stands resolutely, they are definitely urged to retreat, and have no other alternatives." Velayati emphasized, "Iran needs to strengthen its scientific and technological capabilities so as to get able to get self-sufficient, and moves in that direction have been made, to some extent, after the victory of the Islamic Revolution." The leader`s senior advisor said, "New dimensions on South Korea`s nuclear plans were revealed recently, and I assure you that Seoul`s long term secret nuclear activities have definitely been proceeding with full consent and awareness of the Americans." Emphasizing that the Americans spend a tremendous amount of time and money to block Iran`s path towards becoming a nuclear power, Velayati opined, "that is while the Americans quite recently ended ll sanctions they had imposed against India for its nuclear activities, and have started equipping that important NAM country with the most advanced nuclear faculties." The leader`s advisor said, "India is not the only case, since talks are underway for adopting a similar policy regarding Brazil`s nuclear projects, and thus we realize that all those investments are exclusively made to halt Iran`s peaceful nuclear plans." He said, "The Americans have definitely given concessions to the Europeans to gain their support at present level regarding Iran`s nuclear dossier." The former Iranian foreign minister said, "Resorting to such pretexts as `an Iran with military nuclear power`, they wish to paralyze all our activities, and I assure you they would not cease such efforts till erasing us from the scene." Emphasizing that "Iran is potentially fit for becoming a regional and even international power, Velayati reiterated, "Iran`s power at that level would be quite worrying for the Americans, for the Israelis, and for some European countries." He said, "If a nation aims at reaching scientific and technological perfection and embracing high standards in national advancement there would be expenses it has to accept." The leader`s senior advisor in international affairs emphasized, "Despite all current problems and difficulties, we are quite optimistic about the bright future of Iran and the Islamic world." 2329/1771
