Rowhani: Iran-IAEA row may be resolved through diplomatic means

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, Sept 19, IRNA -- Secretary of the Supreme National Security
Council (SNSC) Hassan Rowhani said on Sunday that there is possibility
to resolve the dispute with the International Atomic Energy Agency
(IAEA) through diplomatic means.
"Iranian nuclear case may be closed in November or may cause extra
trouble for Iran, but, there is a possibility to resolve the row
through diplomatic means," he said.
He said that Iran does not need foreign assistance for producing
fuel for the power plants and enjoys enough expertise to do so.
"But, we voluntarily suspended uranium enrichment for
confidence-building and to thwart the propaganda campaign against
Iranian nuclear program."
"We want to prove to the international community that our nuclear
program is for civilian purpose. We have done a lot to do so, and
will go on taking such actions in future too, because we are willing
to develop better relationship with the international community. We
don`t like confrontation and crisis," Rowhani said.
He referred to the 20-year Prospect for Economic, Social and
Cultural Development and said that Iran has decided to turn into a
developed state in the next 20 years and needs satisfactory
relationship with the international community.
"We will go ahead with confidence-building and will endeavor to
build up our technical capability to restore our national rights in
the context of the international conventions. This is our diplomacy
to proceed with on both directions simultaneously," he said.
Asked about the parliament`s plan to boycott economic cooperation
with Britain, Rowhani said the parliament is free to make decision to
that effect, but, if they consult with us, I believe that it is not
an appropriate measure for the time being.
"The parliament has also a plan for enrichment of uranium to make
it binding for the government. If they do so, the executive branch
will carry out the decision," Rowhani said.
Asked whether Iran will resume uranium enrichment, he said that
Iran is sensitive to a note of the resolution concerning uranium
enrichment, because it is a right respected in Non-Proliferation
Treaty and "We don`t have a program to extend the suspension yet."
Answering to a question about the November presidential elections
in the United States and whether it will have any impact on
Washington`s approach toward Iran, he said that the Republicans and
Democrats are different practically.
He criticized the IAEA for combining the voluntary suspension of
uranium enrichment with making it a binding for Iran.
Elaborating on difference between positions of the United States
and the European states on Iran`s program to produce fuel for power
plant, Rowhani said that Washington is totally against Iran`s fuel
production, but, the European states agree with part of the fuel
producing at specified degrees.
