Supreme Leader observes latest stage of Ashoura 5 war games

Tehran, Sept 8, IRNA -- Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei on Saturday inspected the latest stage of the military exercise of the Basij (volunteer forces). The Ashoura 5 grand military exercise of the Basij has been going on in western Iran for eight days with participation of 12 divisions of the Basij supported by the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC). The Basij carried out the military exercise against hypothetical enemy in an area of 60,000 square kilometers. The magnitude of military exercise has been unprecedented in terms of large involvement of armoured divisions, helicopter gunships and paratroopers to the trouble spots. The Supreme Leader visited the command center in Zanjan province to monitor performance of the troops. The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed forces observed launch of surface-to-surface missiles, surface-to-air missiles and offensive of the Basij and IRGC ground forces against bases of the hypothetical enemy aimed at mopping up 60,000 square km territory from enemy infiltration. Infantry forces of the IRGC took the lead in the offensive. Prior to the start of the last stage of the military exercise, IRGC commander Major-General Yahya Rahim Safavi offered a report to the Supreme Leader on the process of the eight-day large scale military exercise. In his report to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, The IRGC commander underscored the successful performance of the Basij and the combat troops of the IRGC. 1416/1412
