Western states threaten to cut IAEA funding over Iran row
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Vienna, Sept 18, IRNA -- Western countries on Saturday threatened to cut their contribution to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) if the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) insisted on its stance to respect Iran`s right to develop nuclear technology in line with the provisions laid down in the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). With the escalation of the dispute between the NAM on one side and the US and the European states on the other, NAM delegates have been informed by IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei of the threat by European states to cut their contribution to the international agency. Western states urged NAM not to put the draft resolution to vote and accept it to be passed by consensus. The agency is financed by both regular and voluntary contributions from member states. The agency is provided with regular budget by the UN and the voluntary contributions of the member states to finance the IAEA technical assistance and cooperation program. 1416/2322/1432
