IAEA chief rejects efforts to politicize Iran`s nuclear case
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Vienna, Sept 14, IRNA -- The Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Mohamed ElBaradei here Tuesday once again stressed that Iran`s nuclear case should be judged on "facts" despite continued US-led efforts to politicize Tehran`s nuclear programs. "I think any decision and I expect and trust the board will take a decision on the basis of facts," ElBaradei told the press ahead of the morning session of the IAEA Board of Governors. ElBaradei confirmed he had seen the latest version of the draft resolution on Iran but he refused to give his assessment of the draft. "It`s not for me to say. It still has to go through a number of consultations. The important thing is to acknowledge and make sure that we would like to see accelerated cooperation by Iran and by countries that have been involved." "And we would like to see light at the end of the tunnel soon," he added. Asked by a reporter whether the November deadline would be counter productive in settling the Iranian nuclear issue, ElBaradei said," I am not against it. I have always said that if the board would like to make an evaluation in November that is the prerogative." He went on to say, "What I am saying is that there is no artificial deadline whereby I can promise that everything would be completed in November because this is a technical process which is very complex. It depends on Iran and it depends on many countries." The IAEA chief stressed that there was no "magic date". ElBaradei urged Iran again to continue its confidence building measures with the UN nuclear watchdog saying that such action could the "precursor of a broader dialogue". He called on Iran again to ratify the additional protocol and to resume suspension activities as two potential confidence-building measures. ElBaradei reiterated that he had seen no concrete proof that Tehran had a weapons program. 1422/1412
