IAEA spokesman stresses steady progress on Iran`s nuclear coop

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Vienna, Sept 14, IRNA -- Spokesman of the International Atomic
Energy Agency (IAEA) Mark Gwozdecky said here on Tuesday that the
agency had a steady progress on Iran`s nuclear cooperation over the
past couple of months.
"We learned more about Iran`s nuclear activities. We managed to,
more or less, resolve couple of issues such as uranium enrichment and
conversion, and put those issues on a more routined bases," he told
IRNA during an exclusive interview.
"We have ruled out one possibility with regards to highly-enriched
Iranian uranium," he added.
But there are still areas that the agency needs to find answers
to, he said adding "in order to get those answers, we need information
from Iran."
The agency also needs information from those countries that
supplied materials and technology to Iran, he stressed, "the
more quickly we get these information, the more rapidly we may
resolve the remaining issues."
On setting a deadline by the agency for Iran, he said the agency
does not work on the basis of deadlines.
The Board of Governors, on the other hand, has the ability to set
deadlines if they wish to do so, he said adding that this is within
their prerogatives.
The board decides on some thing and then it is the agency`s
secretariat that is to carry it out, the Ukrainian spokesman of the
IAEA said.
Answering a question on whether the IAEA would accept the US
decision to send Iran`s nuclear dossier to the UN Security Council,
he said this is not upto the IAEA to decide. It is Board of
Governors that has to decide, he added.
The board is separate from the agency, he said adding that it
represents 35 countries.
They set policies and then the agency and its secretariat are
bodies to carry them out, he said adding that it is their judgment
to send Iran`s nuclear file to the Security Council or not.
"Our job as the IAEA is to find the facts, collect the facts and
present them to the board. The board then decide what to do."
On putting an end to Iran`s nuclear case at the agency, he said
that is one thing that every one agrees on. Everyone would like this
matter to be brought to an end, he added.
"But this process depends on flow of information. We try to move
as quickly as the information comes to us. We would like to wrap it
up as quickly as possible," he reiterated.
As to distribution of the draft of resolution among the delegates
participating in the Board of Governors meeting, he said the
resolution has not yet been distributed.
The resolution is being consulted by the European states and few
other countries, perhaps the US and Russia, and when they come to an
agreement, they will issue the resolution. So far they have not come
to a conclusion, the IAEA spokesman concluded.
