ElBaradei: Good progress on assessing Iran's nuclear program

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Vienna, Sept 13, IRNA -- Director General of the International Atomic
Energy Agency (IAEA) Mohamed ElBardei here Monday urged Iran to do its
utmost to continue to pursue a policy of full transparency and show
full and active cooperation with the IAEA.
Addressing reporters on the sidelines of the sixth session of the
IAEA Board of Governors on Iran, ElBaradei stressed that such a move
by Iran would help settle the remaining issues within the next few
months and would provide assurances to the international community.
"To me this should be precursor or trigger for a broader dialogue
on many of the underlying issues that are under discussion between
Iran and the Europeans in particular and the international community
in general," he added.
"With regards to advanced centrifuges, again we are making some
progress but we still need to have further information to make sure to
confirm or validate Iran`s statement that nothing has happened in the
period of 1995 until 2002."
"Other sets of issues we are dealing with are confidence building
measures that have been requested by the Board for Iran to suspend
enrichment related and reprocessing activities until assurances have
been provided by me to the Board and until the additional protocol
has been in full application," ElBaradei reiterated.
On topics to be discussed by the participating delegates in the
ongoing Board of Governors session, ElBaradei said there are obviously
a lot of discussions among Board members on resolutions to respond to
his reports. The discussions are quite at the early stage, he added.
With regards to some issues like laser and conversion, ElBaradei
said, "We have again reached the point when additional work would be
conducted as part of our routine verification activities. However,
we still need to do much more work with regards to contamination to
make sure there is no undeclared enrichment in Iran or undeclared
nuclear activities."
