Iran will 'nip any plot in the bud, says intelligence minister
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Mashhad, Khorassan prov, Sept 4, IRNA -- Days after announcing the arrest of dozens for spying on Iran`s nuclear program, Intelligence Minister Ali Younesi vowed here Saturday that his ministry would `nip any plot in the bud`. Speaking at a ceremony in this northeastern city to mark the 20th anniversary of his ministry`s establishment, Younesi said the Intelligence Ministry has all the enemies of the Islamic Republic under surveillance. "We easily manage our enemies and arrest them whenever needed," said the minister, who is fresh from announcing Tuesday that several people had been arrested for transferring nuclear information abroad. "The Information (Intelligence) Ministry has all affairs under surveillance with full command and it will nip any plot in the bud," Younesi said, adding `we admit having the best intelligence service in the world now`. "The Information Ministry, thanks to its enormous experience, is now able to fight out an intelligence battle against the most powerful security establishments of the world. "And we believe we can win most of those battles," he added. On Tuesday, the minister stressed his ministry`s capabilities in uncovering espionage against the Islamic Republic, saying `we have already arrested tens of spies`. "The Information Ministry`s counter-spying department is equipped with the most advanced devices and acts with power and utmost skill against infiltration of spy services," he added. Younesi cited some of his ministry`s achievements, including helping Iran steer clear from some of the major showdowns, similar to what has befallen on its doorsteps in Iraq and Afghanistan. "We have put behind many crises and managed to turn some of these crises into opportunities. "If the Islamic Republic had not act wisely, the crisis which occurred in Iraq and Afghanistan could have unfolded in our country," the intelligence minister said. Younesi recounted some of the Intelligence Ministry`s operations against the terrorist Mujahedin Khalq Organization (MKO) which has been involved in a ruthless campaign over the past 25 years, targeting many officials and civilians. On Tuesday, the minister said Munafeqin or hypocrites -- the name given to them by the Islamic Republic -- have passed the bulk of secrets about Iran`s nuclear program to the enemies. "Munafeqin have had the lead role in passing information (about Iran`s nuclear facilities) and have already expressed their pride in spying against Iran. "In a news conference which they held once in the United States, they said they were proud of passing this information to America and other countries," Younesi said. The minister said the MKO has `aggrandized` Iran`s nuclear facilities, even though they have been announced conventional by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). "Stirring up tensions and terrorism is part of the Munafeqin`s nature and they are seriously preparing themselves for carrying out such operations in our country, but they will not succeed," Younesi said. 2323/2322/1432
