FM urges IAEA to act "professionally" toward Iran nuclear case

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Karaj, Aug 20, IRNA -- Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi here on
Thursday called on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to
act professionally and not to be impressed by US pressure in dealing
with Iran`s nuclear energy case in the September meeting of its Board
of Governors.
Kharrazi said the US will definitely try to exaggerate Iran`s case
at the IAEA meeting and create an atmosphere to prevent Iran`s access
to the nuclear technology.
"Given that Iran has had comprehensive cooperation with the IAEA
over its nuclear issue and answered all questions, we expect that
Iran`s case will run its normal course," he told reporters during a
visit to a power management company.
"Still, we will wait to see how the IAEA will act in the
September meeting, and this will be a response to Iran`s cooperation
with the agency. It is in that case that the IAEA can show how
efficient it is."
Kharrazi said the US never wants Iran to gain access to nuclear
technology in order to address its energy needs, adding that this
runs counter to international regulations.
"All signatories to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) are
obliged to help, not obstruct, the struggles of a country toward
peaceful use of nuclear technology," he said.
Kharrazi said Iran has always been trying to be transparent in its
nuclear energy plans and act under the IAEA supervision. He then
reiterated that the Islamic Republic will never attempt to develop
atomic weapons.
"Therefore, it is our legitimate right to make use of nuclear
technology for peaceful purposes. The US, however, is making
exorbitant demands over the issue."
