IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Tehran, Aug 7, IRNA -- Minister of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics Rear-Admiral Ali Shamkhani said on Saturday that Iranian nuclear program is fully in line with the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Speaking to reporters on the occasion of the Journalists Day, Shamkhani said that acquiring nuclear technology is Iran`s legitimate right adding that Iran has no hidden activities concerning to its nuclear program. "Iran is exercising full cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as a confidence-building measure. Iran is doing so honestly in line with its international obligations," Shamkhani said. "Non-civilian application of nuclear energy runs counter to the Islamic tenets and Iran regards such an action as illegitimate," the defense minister said. "Israel is fabricating the claims on Iranian nuclear program to cover up international concerns about its own stockpiles of nuclear arms," Shamkhani said. President Mohammad Khatami said last month that Iran believes that possessing nuclear arms makes the countries more vulnerable and it is no longer regarded as a means for military strength. Iranian representative to IAEA Hossein Mousavian said that Iranian religious leaders and Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei have specified manufacturing nuclear arms as `forbidden in Islam` (Haram) and Iran does not see nuclear weapon as means of military strength. 1416/2322/1432
