Nuclear weapons have no place in Iran`s security doctrine: FM

Tehran, June 30, IRNA -- Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi said in Mexico City on Wednesday nuclear weapons have no place in Iran`s security doctrine, stressing Iran is among countries that call for a Middle East free from weapons of mass destruction. Kharrazi, who arrived in Mexico on Monday on an official visit, made the remark in a meeting with his Mexican counterpart Luis Ernesto Derbez. "All Iran`s nuclear activities and programs are under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency," he said. Pointing to the developments in Iraq, he added that holding elections and establishment of a popular government in Iraq should be now on the top of the country`s agenda. "The Islamic Republic seriously calls for settlement of Iraq`s problems and will help the country to this effect," he stressed. During the meeting, the two sides discussed possible avenues for bolstering bilateral ties as well as economic and cultural cooperation. The two minister also discussed ways to reinforce mutual consultation on various international issues and called for further cooperation between the private sectors of the two countries. Kharrazi and Derbez welcomed exchange of political, economic and cultural delegations. They also described consolidation of ties within the framework of cultural cooperation very positive. The two sides voiced their determination to boost cultural cooperation and regarded a program on mutual cultural exchanges a new chapter in cultural relations between the two countries. The program on cultural exchanges for a three-year period (2004-06) was signed during the current visit to Mexico of Foreign Minister Kharrazi. Iran and Mexico stressed the need to promote tourism industry and cooperation in this field between the two countries as a cultural-economic step. The ministers reviewed the existing opportunities, resources and economic fields to boost economic ties including setting up of joint chambers of commerce and called for making use of the two countries` geographical location to strengthen transregional trade and commercial cooperation. Directors general of the Iranian and Mexican foreign ministries signed the program for cultural exchanges and education cooperation in the presence of Kharrazi and Derbez. The program covers issues ranging from higher education to exchange of information and experiences in the fields of educational systems, literature and linguistics and from international research, cultural products, cultural heritage and archaeology to holding international theater and music festivals and exhibitions as well as international book fairs and cooperation in various publishing areas. 2327/1414
