SNSC secretary: Iran fully cooperates with IAEA
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Tehran, June 27, IRNA -- Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Hassan Rowhani said here Sunday that in the Tehran Declaration signed by Iran and three European countries, the Europeans assured Tehran of their commitment towards Iran`s peaceful application of nuclear energy. In the Declaration, the Europeans also recognized Iran`s right to have access to nuclear technology for peaceful application, he pointed out. They accepted that Iran`s suspension of uranium enrichment was a voluntary move and this does not imply that the country should abandon such activities for ever, he underlined. "Our voluntary move should not be regarded as a legal commitment and the Majlis has the final say on this matter," he said. IAEA should help those countries seeking peaceful use of nuclear energy such as Iran and should monitor their activities whereas the agency only focuses on the latter task at the expense of the former, something that is beneficial to industrialized countries alone, he said. "We should prove that our enemies have launched a propaganda campaign to distort our image in the world while we are not really seeking access to atomic bombs," he said. The Islamic Republic of Iran is to resolve the issue through diplomatic channels to maintain its nuclear achievements, he said. "There is no doubt that Iran has attained necessary technological know-how to produce yellow cake from uranium and convert it into UF4 and then UF6. "The world has been aware of the capabilities we have acquired in this field by relying on our own scientists. The industrialized world has not given us such a gift that now it wants to take away," he said. The issue of P-2 centrifuge has been resolved and is not important any longer, he said. "We have not imported P-2 from abroad and our own scientists have manufactured a very limited number of them inside the country," he said. Iran`s nuclear dossier is now limited to a few minor points, the SNSC secretary said. The Europeans are now retreating from their previous positions now that grounds have been prepared for Iran to resume uranium enrichment, he said. "We believe that the issue would be resolved through mutual negotiations," he pointed out. As per agreement reached with the Europeans on February 23, Iran agreed to voluntarily suspend uranium enrichment while the uropeans pledged to remove Iran`s dossier from the agenda of IAEA Board of Governors, he said. Since the Europeans could not or failed to keep their promises and remove Iran`s dossier from the agenda of IAEA`s Board of Governors, Iran considers it as a violation of their commitments, he said. Over the past eight months, Iran`s Atomic Energy Organization, ministry of foreign affairs along with other organizations have fulfilled a very grave task of convincing world nations that Iran has not deviated from its commitment towards peaceful application of nuclear energy, he said. All ambiguities regarding Iran`s nuclear activities have been removed, he said, adding that as the IAEA director general has said only two minor issues concerning contaminated parts and their origin have remained to be solved. 1430/1412
