IAEA pressure on Iran to ratify protocol non-democratic: official
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Shahroud, Mazandaran prov, June 18, IRNA -- Kazem Jalali, a member of Iranian parliament, here Thursday censured the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), saying the UN`s nuclear watchdog`s pressure on Iran to ratify the additional protocol to NPT is not democratic. Talking to IRNA, parliament`s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission spokesman criticized the "tough" language used in the IAEA draft resolution, adding it is not acceptable the European trio (Britain, France, and Germany) in a non-democratic move impose their decision on Majlis and set assignment for it. His remarks came as the big European three submitted a draft resolution to the IAEA`s Board of Governors, urging Iran to approve the protocol. The protocol would allow the IAEA inspectors to conduct snap inspections of the Iranian nuclear sites. Tehran signed the protocol in December 2003 but it still has to be ratified by the 7th Majlis, which opened on May 27. The MP assured that ratification of the protocol will be facilitated if the agency and its board resolve the issue through a technical approach and free from outside pressure. Representative of Shahroud stressed that it is the absolute right of Iran to have access to nuclear energy and no one can deprive the country. 1394/2325/1432
