US, EU at odds over IAEA resolution on Iran`s nuke program
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Vienna, June 15, IRNA -- The US and EU are at loggerhead over IAEA final resolution on Iran`s nuclear program, said a US official here Tuesday. Speaking to IRNA, the spokesman to US delegation to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said that Washington was after a strong-worded resolution that obliges Iran to answer all remaining ambiguities about its nuclear program. The United States accuses Iran of attempting to develop nuclear weapons and is pressing the IAEA to adopt a strong resolution against the country and refer the issue to the U.N. Security Council for possible sanctions. The spokesman also accused the EU trio (Britain, Germany and France) of taking into consideration their own trade relations with Iran in preparing a `moderate draft resolution` on the country. "Iran can only benefit from such advantages only when if has relations with the US too," said the spokesman in an unusual remarks without saying what he really meant by advantages. Expressing doubt over the possibility of the EU`s draft resolution being passed by the IAEA, the spokesman stressed that the final resolution should include a deadline and timetable for Iran to cooperate fully with the agency as well as the world "condemnation". He also emphasized that setting a deadline and timetable was always a useful way to "push countries pursuing nuclear programs to abide by laws and regulations. "Iran must instantly allow the IAEA inspectors to visit the country`s nuclear sites" and carry out snap inspections, concluded the spokesman. 1394/1412
