Muslims wont keep silence against US

Presidency of The Islamic Republic of Iran
16 May 2004

Particular Shiites, will not remain silent in the face of such aggression. The US is currently pursuing dangerous policies that are threatening peace in the region and the entire world more than at any other time, President Khatami stressed. Washington, on the pretext of pursuing a war against terrorism, is interfering in the domestic affairs of other states, he said, adding that US discriminatory policies are fueling extremism and violence in the world. Noting the increase in terrorist strikes in various parts of the world, he said the US' continued support for the terrorist regime in Tel Aviv and its occupation of Iraq are two of the biggest mistakes made by US officials. He added that this occupation is now creating problems for both the Iraqi nation and US forces. The US, by invading and occupying Iraq, has not only insulted the Iraqi nation but has also trampled on the rights of all regional countries as well as the United Nations, President Khatami said. Referring to the deplorable situation now prevailing in war-torn Iraq, where counts of people, including innocent women and children, are killed almost every day and houses as well as Shiite religious sites are bombed, Khatami said a kind of global conse nsus should be reached to stop these savage acts. Underlining the need to hand over power to the Iraqi people at the earliest, he urged the US to end its occupation of Iraq. During the meeting, a number of Governors-General briefed the President on the situation prevailing in their respective provinces.
